Kevin Palmer

Friend, husband, father, learner, teacher, son, brother, traveler, dreamer, fisherman, runner, ref, mate, mentor, manager, coach….

Kevin began his ‘teaching’ career when first anointed as PE-shed Monitor in Form 1 at the local catholic primary school which was under the strict control of the Sisters and the gentler guidance of legendary teachers such as Ray Mettrick and Vince Costello.

The move into secondary school at St John’s College and then Hastings Boys’ High school was not without its teenage ups and downs but the likes of Ian McKinley, Steve Nelson and ‘Monsigner’ Denis Duffy at SJC and Mark Cleary at HBHS, saw him through School Cert and UE and out into the so-called big wide world.

Escaping to Palmerston North Teachers’ College it was here that he seemed to find his feet and a sense of purpose; develop a fleetingly short taste for student politics and by very good luck chance upon his ‘girl’ Linda, his wife of today.

Encouraged by Barry Gregg, Ian Knowles, Morva Croxon and of course our dear Wendy Owen at TCol and then by Pat Nolan at Massey University, he was well-prepared for the working world of education and educators.

He cut his teeth at Riverdale School with Ira Richardson, Billy Chote and Andrea Tamatea learning to put the theory into practice, before the inevitable NZ rite of passage and the pull of the great OE beckoned.

Following a few years of worldwide travel and working in the UK in the cut-throat field of personnel consultancy he returned to NZ, bought a house to do up and started onto a pathway and passion for property investment.

Settled back in NZ he started teaching at Palmerston North Boys’ High School where 13 years flicked by as teacher, manager and leader in the roles of Dean, Head of Department, 1st XV Manager, Staff Trustee and then Deputy-Rector working with Kathryn Rankin, Denis Duffy (again), the ‘Doc’ Gerard O’Connor, coach Joe Schmidt,  Grant Sinclair, Associate Rector Alec Astle and the man himself – Rector Dave Syms.

Sensing a need for change (and rather than buy a Harley), he moved on from PNBHS, firstly into project management work bringing together various government and non-government agencies to set up the Safety Advisory Board; and then followed a few very eye-opening years working for the NZ Police, before starting up his own educational consultancy company.

Tucked in there along the way two fantastic daughters were born, grew, and have now flown the nest; great adventures and travel with family and friends have happened with more still to come; many roads and tracks have been run and traversed; a few properties and the bach have been acquired; and students, teachers, principals, and Boards have influenced and been positively influenced.

And so what of me. And of you. And of us.

It’s the people you meet on life’s pathways that matter. The people who have positive impact and influence on us; and the people we have positive impact and influence upon too. So family, friends, colleagues and yes clients too -  you are who and what matters the most - this gives us purpose.
